Arizona’s draconian anti-immigration laws have impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals. SB 1070 and employer sanction laws exposed the fault lines that divide the nation, and their tectonic clash is dramatically rendered in “Two Americans.”
The documentary by Valeria Fernandez contrasts the stories of two U.S. citizens. On one side of the issue is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has politicized immigration to gain political power, targeting the undocumented and spreading terror throughout communities. On the other side of the spectrum is a 9-year-old girl fighting the incarceration of her undocumented parents.
Surrounding their conflict is a culture grappling with state and federal policies like the secure communities or 287(g) agreement, which transforms law enforcement officers into deportation machines and tears apart Latino communities.
